*A "coup de bordure" in cycling, also known as a "fan", occurs when a group of riders take advantage of weather conditions, such as crosswinds, to position themselves in such a way as to cut the peloton into several pieces. This usually happens when the wind blows sideways, creating shelter for riders at the front and exposing those at the back. Riders at the front of the peloton form a diagonal line, creating a natural edge that protects them from the wind and propels them faster. This move can be strategic to isolate favourites or opposing teams, or simply to take advantage of the conditions to get ahead of less well-positioned competitors.
